The PR70also known as 36SMn14, is a manganese-sulphur alloyed automatic steelcharacterised by excellent workability e good mechanical properties. It is the version lead-free of PR80 (36SMnPb14)therefore maintains the same mechanical performance but is more environmentally friendly and complies with environmental regulations (ROHS and REACH).
Thanks to the good mechanical strength and the possibility of heat treatmentis ideal for the production of precision mechanical small parts with diameters between 3 and 32 mm and lengths up to 250 mmas in your production.
Why use PR70 (36SMn14)?
- Suitable for high speeds on CNC and automatic lathes.
- Good surface finish, but may require minor adjustments compared to leaded steels.
- Suitable for components subject to dynamic loads and vibrations.
- Cementable to achieve a harder surface while maintaining internal toughness.
- Suitable for applications in sectors where lead is banned (food, medical, plumbing).
Applications of small parts in PR70 (36SMn14)
Mechanical and Automotive
- Components for transmissions and gearboxes.
- Structural elements for mechanisms subject to wear and tear.
Hydraulics and Pneumatics
- Components for hydraulic and fluid handling systems.
Industrial Machinery Sector
- Axles and pivots of machinery.
Electromechanical Sector
When to avoid PR70 (36SMn14)?
If very high workability is required → The absence of lead makes it less machinable than PR80 (36SMnPb14).
If high corrosion resistance is required → Not stainless, so for wet or aggressive environments better AISI 303, 304 or 316.
If optimal weldability is required → The presence of sulphur reduces the quality of the weld.
If you need a cheaper steel for general applications → In that case, theAVZ (11SMn37) may be a more convenient choice.
The PR70 (36SMn14) is an excellent alternative lead-free at PR80 (36SMnPb14), combining good workability, high mechanical strength and environmental compatibility. It is ideal for precision mechanical small parts high-strengthespecially in lead-restricted sectors such as plumbing, food and medical. However, if the maximum workability is an essential requirement, the PR80 remains superior.
PR70 (36SMn14) with galvanising treatment
The PR70 (36SMn14) is a lead-free automatic steel, known for its good workability and superior mechanical strength compared to AVP and AVZ. Being lead-free, it is a more environmentally friendly choice than the PR80 (36SMnPb14) and compliant with environmental regulations ROHS and REACH.
Thanks to its content of sulphur (S) and manganese (Mn), guarantees excellent machinability and good hardnessmaking it suitable for components subject to mechanical stress. However, corrosion resistance is limited, so it is often galvanised to improve its durability and protect it from oxidation and rust
Why use galvanised PR70?
- Excellent surface finish → Ideal for precision small parts.
- Environmentally friendly alternative to PR80 → Lead-free, compliant with ROHS and REACH.
- Good fatigue and wear resistanceideal for moving parts.
- Longer duration in humid environments or exposed to the weather.
Applications of galvanised PR70 hardware
Mechanical and Automotive
- Transmission components and mechanical supports.
Hydraulics and Pneumatics
- Components for hydraulic pumps and cylinders.
Furnishing and Carpentry Sector
- Structural components with good mechanical strength.
Electromechanical and Industrial
- Fasteners for electrical panels and metal structures.
When to avoid galvanised PR70?
If high corrosion resistance is required → Galvanising helps, but for aggressive environments it is better to use AISI 304 or 316.
If you work in environments with lead restrictions → Although lead-free, zinc plating may not be accepted in some medical or food sectors.
If good weldability is required → Sulphur content worsens weldability.
If the part has to withstand extreme loads → In this case, a stronger alloy steel is better.
The PR70 galvanised is an excellent choice for small mechanical parts thanks to the good workability, high mechanical strength and corrosion protection. It is particularly suitable for automotive, hydraulics, pneumatics and carpentrybut it is not the best solution for highly corrosive environments or frequent welding.
