AISI 304

AISI 304 is one of the most versatile and widespread austenitic stainless steels due to its excellent corrosion resistance, good machinability and weldability

Chemical composition

X5CrNi18-10

ISO Standard

1.4301

For precision mechanical small parts with diameters between 3 and 32 mm and lengths up to 250 mm, it is an optimal choice for applications requiring durability and resistance to chemicals.

Why use AISI 304?

1
Excellent corrosion resistance
- Superior to theAISI 303due to the lower presence of sulphur
- Ideal for environments moist, chemical and slightly acidic
- Good oxidation resistance up to 800°C
2
Good workability
- Easy to turn and mill, but less machinable than theAISI 303
- Suitable for small parts requiring high precision and surface finish
3
Excellent weldability
- Much more weldable compared to theAISI 303due to the absence of sulphur
- Ideal for components requiring assembly by welding
4
Excellent mechanical and fatigue strength
- Tensile strength up to 550-600 MPa
- Perfect for components subject to stresses and vibrations
5
Good resistance to high temperatures
- Retains mechanical properties up to 800°C
- Useful for applications with frequent thermal cycles
6
Suitable for food and medical use
- Used in food, pharmaceutical and biomedical industry
- Safe for contact with food and liquids without release of harmful substances

When to avoid AISI 304?

In highly corrosive environments (chlorides, marine environments, strong acids) → Better AISI 316

If needed greater machinability → Better AISI 303

For applications with high friction without lubrication → Better hardened steels
